Importance of Fitness
Many of you will not want to hear this, but you need to hear it anyway: eating well and getting exercise is key to stress reduction and extending your life span. Exercise increases energy, regulates biorhythms, improves sleep and helps control weight. When you are in good physical shape, your body is more resistant to the erosion of stress. You look healthier and toned, which in turn helps you feel better about yourself. Exercise has also been shown to prevent and curb depression, accordingly to the 1996 US Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health.
I work out daily because health is a priority for me. I don’t just stick to the same routine year after year; I always look for new ways to keep myself interested in fitness. For instance, I might try new exercise techniques like working out with tension bands or wearing a heart monitor during my workout sessions. My wife Rita and I also plan fun activities that include fitness. Next year, for example, we plan to take a biking vacation as part of our goal to incorporate more physical exercise into our lives.
