Reflection

Decades after I first immigrated to Canada from England, I still reflect on the adventure of traveling to a new country and standing on the deck of the Queen Mary with my Mom, looking out at the ocean. The ship’s motors churned up the water furiously, leaving behind a “road” of white wake. To my seven-year-old eyes, this “road” appeared to stretch all the way to the horizon. I stood there holding my Mom’s hand for what seemed like hours. I felt so confident in the future, so safe and secure, yet at the same time so full of trepidation — what would my new home be like, who would I meet, what new friends would I make? I still feel wonderful when I think back on that time.

The philosopher Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” I agree it’s important for you to examine your life from time to time, and reflect on the fantastic experiences you’ve had. In difficult times, you can quickly “go there” in your imagination. I often think back to my Queen Mary experience. I recall attending a bank meeting when I was having serious financial challenges. When the lawyers became particularly obnoxious, I let my mind drift back to the time I stood on the deck of the ship with my Mom. I’m sure those lawyers were wondering why I sat there so calmly, with a smile on my face.
