Goal Setting – A Values Model

As you set your goals and focus on them, reflect upon your life—the past you’ve led and the future you envision. What moments have been rewarding? Or disappointing? What has remained important over time, and what is most important to you now? What truly motivates and inspires you … gives you a feeling of success? Who are the people who you care about the most? Of all of the things that you have now, which could you give up? Which items, experiences and relationships could you not live without? What values are important to you? What values really drive you to succeed?

When we define values, words like trust, ethics, honesty and integrity always come to mind. Yet values are more inherent than the quality of our character. Perhaps qualities such as ethics and integrity arise as a result of our values, since they are guiding principals – ideals that:

  • Represent those things that most matter.
  • Satisfy our inner longing for meaning.
  • Influence every aspect of our interaction with the world.
  • Motivate and inspire us – helping us to really achieve our goals.
It’s worth thinking about…that our values aren’t intangible at all. Instead, values are the core essentials that design our experiences, drive our day-today work achievements and career ambitions. Our values can serve as the quintessential architect of our successes – and when we connect with them they serve our career ‘calling’ while evolving our human condition.

Are your values working today? Are they part of your goal-planning strategy? If not, then it’s time to do a reality check.
