Setting Goals—A Values Guide for Success
Success, whether it’s about realizing a business vision, reaching the pinnacle of wealth and career achievement, or a gauge of your personal happiness … where does success begin, where does it lead … how do you measure it? In a way that’s relevant and meaningful?
It’s a question worth thinking about. After all, some of the most successful people – considered so in others opinions, would instead say their life and work is a disappointment – by their terms judge ‘success’ as failure. And people that others might not consider successful are completely content right where they are. So what’s the difference? It’s how we perceive goals, how we set them and whether we align them with our idea of success – our ideal hopes and vision.
Setting goals, and creating a routine to monitor goals and reflect on them, provides a constant reminder of what we envision for our businesses and work teams, our families, our lives and ourselves. Our goal-setting plan is a blueprint that empowers us to gauge the current state, strategically plan the next move -- fully envision the entire stage ahead. And the logic model we use for setting goals is also a quantitative means to measure outcomes – what happened? What’s next? But a model that’s aligned with our values makes a qualitative difference; it empowers us to perceive the overall impact – to identify the changes in our path and behavior.
