Entrepreneur Peter H. Thomas Funds Leadership Institute at Royal Roads University

For immediate release – Dec. 13, 2006

Victoria – Peter H. Thomas, founder of Century 21 Real Estate in Canada and the not-for-profit LifePilot organization, is donating $500,000 to Royal Roads University to create the Todd Thomas Institute for Values-Based Leadership. The institute, which will be part of RRU’s School of Leadership, will sponsor research, visiting professorships, and scholarships. It is named in honour of Thomas’ son Todd, who committed suicide in 2000. The tragic event inspired Thomas to create LifePilot which provides workshops and resources – often to the world’s leading business people – to help people lead a values-based life in alignment with their daily objectives and life goals. Net proceeds raised by LifePilot (www.lifepilot.org) are donated to children’s and mental health charities.

“Todd’s death inspired me to find a way to use my God-given skills, network and influence to make the world a better place,” said Thomas. “Both Royal Roads and LifePilot are committed to teaching individuals and organizations how to live lives and lead others based on values and clear priorities. Our shared values, goals and mission will make this a strong, synergistic partnership.”

In addition to his own gift, Thomas will work with the university to lead a campaign to raise several millions in additional funds to endow the work of the institute, which will also include a graduate certificate in values-based leadership.

“Peter’s work with LifePilot shows how the persistence, energy and entrepreneurial skills of a great leader can really make a difference,” said RRU acting president Bob Skene. “We are grateful for this wonderful opportunity to advance his work and ours in offering applied, professional leadership programs.”

RRU’s leadership Master of Arts was the first degree program to be offered by the 11-year-old university. It is now the largest graduate level leadership program in North America.
